A chef or head cook is responsible for supervising other cooks and overseeing all of the cooking done in a kitchen. Apart from seeing that the food is tasty, well plated, and attractive, a chef has to decide on the size of the servings, prices, menus, and order the appropriate amount of supplies. Duties include checking all equipments in the kitchen to see that they are in good condition. A chef of a reasonably large restaurant, club, or hotel is responsible for managing cooks, kitchen helpers, and dishwashers. A chef should have a high school education along with several years of experience as a cook. A vocational or technical training, a two-year or four-year college education, or adult education programs involving cooking programs and courses may also be considered useful for a chef’s role. A cooking diploma may be essential for some positions. A chef should have a keen sense of taste and smell.
