My friend was telling me about her daughter who has been a chronic thumb sucker since birth. At first she thought it was cute and liked the idea that her daughter could pacify herself at will. However, as her daughter grew, it became obvious that the habit was causing dental problems. Her teeth were bucked out and loose and by the age of three the two front teeth were sticking out so much that she kept knocking them. By three and a half, both front teeth had been knocked out. She had tried several methods to overcome the problem but then finally helped her daughter stop thumb sucking by the age of 5 when she discovered this site. thought the link might be useful to others.
