Gray Whales

2:41 am Travel and Leisure

There are many different types of whales that you can see while whale watching off the coast of Southern California, including the gray whale.  The Pacific Ocean is the only place where you will find these animals, with them spending summer months off the coast of Alaska, and summer months off the coast of California.  At one time they were found in the North Atlantic Ocean, but were hunted to extinction there.  Although there population has fluctuated through periods of whale hunting and then trying to prevent extinction, they now number approximately 26.000. Due to their population growth, they were removed from the endangered species list in 1994.
